Sterling Pound, a graded stakes winner/producer, has been euthanized because of progressive infirmities. The 18-year daughter of Seeking the Gold was in foal to Empire Maker.
Sterling Pound initially raced as a homebred for Heidi Doubleday, winning the 1994 Honey Bee Handicap (gr. III). She was acquired after her first start in 1995 by Philip Freedman and was graded stakes-placed for him. She retired with a dozen wins or placings from 17 races and earnings of $155,619.
As a broodmare for Freedman’s Cliveden Stud, Sterling Pound produced eight named foals. Six are winners, including grade II winner Exchange Rate (by Danzig) and English group winner Sabre d’Argent (by Kris S.). Exchange Rate, a $1.4 million Keeneland July yearling, stands at Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky. Sterling Pound’s unnamed yearling filly is by Bernardini.
Sterling Pound, who is out of the stakes-winning Spectacular Bid mare Spectacular Bev, will be buried at Middlebrook Farm near Lexington.
