(Edited Fair Grounds press release)
Jockey Francisco Torres will be out of action indefinitely after tests Jan. 9 revealed a fractured clavicle. Torres was thrown from a 3-year-old filly trained by Mark Frostad near the half-mile pole during morning workouts Jan.8 at the Fair Grounds in Louisiana.
Initial tests proved negative, but when pain persisted, Torres sought a second opinion the morning of Jan. 9, when the fracture was revealed. Torres said he will see a specialist early next week.
Through Jan. 8, Torres ranked second in Fair Grounds' rider standings with 30 wins from 205 mounts, including a pair of four-win days. His mounts have earned more than $825,000, which leads all riders.
The filly had just completed a four-furlong workout from the gate and was galloping out when she collapsed and died.
