Two days after being thrown and a day after cosmetic dental surgery, jockey Garrett Gomez was back aboard horses at Santa Anita Dec. 29, winning two races.

Gomez is trying to catch Jerry Bailey and his record earnings for a year. To date, Gomez has earned $23,275,879, less than $80,000 shy of Bailey’s 2003 mark of $23,354,960.

Gomez was thrown Dec. 27 when the juvenile Back at You tried to jump the rail during the Eddie Logan Stakes. He broke several front teeth, cut his knee, and one of his hands was swollen. He took off his mounts the following day but was back accepting mounts Dec. 29 and won the third race on Suit Yourself and the fifth race on Trainspotting.
