Alpine Rose Reaches Arqana Sale Summit

The Aga Khan Studs sold the four most expensive horses – including Alpine Rose, who brought 550,000 euros -- during the second session of the Arqana December breeding stock sale in France Dec. 7.

Suprina (Patricia Boutin) purchased Alpine Rose, who finished third this year in the Prix Minerve-Shadwell (Fr-I) and the Prix Joubert, Dec. The 3-year-old daughter of Linamix is out of the stakes-winning Shirley Heights mare Fragrant Hill and has captured two of her six career races. Alpine Rose is a full sister to French champion Fragrant Mix, French group III winner Fracassant, and French stakes winners Farfala and Fascinating Mix.

Celebre Vadala the second-highest-priced horse, brought 525,000 euros from Andreas Putsch’s Haras de Saint Pair. A 5-year-old daughter of Peintre Celebre out of the stakes-winning Linamix mare Vadlamixa, Celebre Vadala scored in the 2006 Prix Melisande Grand Prix de Fontainebleau. In foal to Selkirk, she is a half-sister to Valixir (by Trempolino), a group I winner in France and England.

The third- and fourth-highest-priced horses were the winning 3-year-old Highest Honor filly Dariena, who sold for 500,000 euros, and the winning 3-year-old Dubai Destination filly Shadiyna, who brought 280,00 euros. Riviera Equine purchased Dariena, and trainer Nicolas Clement bought Shadiyna.

In all, 174 horses (from 228 offered) were sold Dec. 7 for a gross of 4,919,000 euros. The average price was 28,270 euros, and the median was 12,000 euros. Compared to 2007’s second session results, when 172 horses were sold, the gross was down 24.6% from 6,520,500 euros. The average fell 25.4% from 37,910 euros while the median dropped 40.0% from 20,000 euros.

Five horses were sold privately this year, grossing 29,500 euros. In 2007, 11 horses sold privately for 227,000 euros.

The third and final session of the breeding stock auction is scheduled for Dec. 8.
