Mirio, the only horse in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Fr-I) field with no previous group stakes experience, upset the talented filly Egyptband and seven others in Sunday's 1 1/2-mile race at Saint-Cloud. On good turf, Mirio completed the distance in 2:29.30.Second favorite Perfect Sunday finished 1 1/2 lengths back in second, a neck ahead of Egyptband, with Acceleration fourth.Mirio's lone prior stakes start resulted in a third-place finish in the Prix Le Fabuleux on yielding turf last October. Mirio is trained by Jean-Michel de Choubersky for owner Eric Soderberg. Christophe Soumillon rode the 4-year-old French-bred to victory. Mirio (Priolo--Mira Monte, by Baillamont) was bred by Petra Bloodstock Agency."Mirio is a very consistent horse who has never finished further than fourth in his career and who has needed time to mature mentally," his trainer told the French Racing and Breeding Committee. "In fact he needs to have it his own way in a race and when everything goes right he is capable of nice things. I felt that it was time to run him in a group race. We will now rest him and bring him back for the Prix Foy (Fr-II) at Longchamp in September, with the Arc in mind."The win improves Mirio's career record to six wins from 14 starts.
