Veteran exercise rider Ignacio Ramirez was killed on the morning of Nov. 16 when the horse he was aboard flipped over and fell on him in the barn area at Golden Gate Fields.

Ramirez, 58, had just left the barn and was heading to the racetrack for a workout when the filly he was riding became spooked and flipped. The filly, who was not identified, was not injured.

Additional details were unavailable.

“This was a tragic accident,” said Golden Gate Fields general manager Robert Hartman. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ignacio’s family and friends. It’s a very sad day for the entire racing community.”

Services are pending, said track spokesman Tom Ferrall.
