S.J. Bee Stable's Buster's Daydream reprised his success in the Flash Stakes (gr. III) with a 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday's $106,300 Tremont Stakes (gr. III) at Belmont Park.
Overbrook Farm's Day Trader was sent to the early lead under Jerry Bailey, with Buster's Daydream pressing through an opening quarter-mile run in :22.57. Buster's Daydream moved up to challenge on the turn and took over the lead at the top of the stretch en route to the win. Under John Velazquez, Buster's Daydream completed the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.96 on a fast track.
"We had a great trip," Velazquez said. "He had no problems stalking the speed. When I asked him, he took off for the front. He was waiting on other horses a bit, but when Draw Play drew up close, he gave me another gear."
Draw Play finished second, followed by Day Trader, Pinch Hitter, and Cloudy Mist.
Buster's Daydream returned $5, $3, and $2.10. Draw Play paid $3.40 and $2.30. Day Trader was worth $2.20 to show. The winning exacta combination returned $12.80.
Buster's Daydream (Housebuster--Daydream, by Believe It) was bred in Kentucky by Lucy G. Bassett. The Tremont win marks the third in four starts for the Timothy J. Tullock Jr. trained colt. Buster's Daydream earned $63,780 for the win.
"He was not quite as sharp as he was last time (for the Flash) or as fresh," the conditioner said. "Good horses overcome that, and he proved a lot. We're going to keep him going along as the distances stretch out. The dam's side has two stakes winners, both in routes. There's nothing to say that he won't go longer. He didn't take a deep breath out there today." (Chart, Equibase
