Lexi Star Retired, to be Bred

Ten months after Silmaril retired with a victory in the What A Summer Stakes, her multiple stakes winning stablemate Lexi Star also went out a winner in an allowance feature at Laurel Park Nov. 12.

The Crypto Star mare, who won five career stakes races at three different tracks and was a perfect six-for-six at the allowance level, boosted her earnings to $605,424. Silmaril retired with $1,032,973 in earnings and ranks in the top 20 all-time Maryland breds list.

“I always thought she was going to be as good as Silmaril but she was not as fortunate away from Maryland,” said trainer Christopher Grove. “Having those two in my barn was a reason to get out of bed every day. They gave me everything they had. Lexi may not have been as consistent, but she had a great career. She struggled a bit today, and that is why it is time to call it quits. When she was on her best she would have won this race by eight or nine lengths. She had to dig deep and find the class today, so I know it is time.”

Lexi Star is now headed to owner Stephen Quick’s St. Omer’s Farm in Harford County to prepare for the 2009 breeding season.
