A weanling colt by Tapit was purchased by agent Ben Glass for $250,000 to top the Nov. 10 session of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Overall, the session saw a continuation of the trend throughout the sale in which numbers declined in all major statistical categories.
Consigned by his Kentucky breeder, Mr. and Mrs. Jody Huckabay's Elm Tree Farm, the colt is out of the Green Dancer mare Rumba Punch, and is a half-brother to stakes winner Lyin’ Heart.
Gross receipts for Monday totaled $5,579,600, down 50.5% from the $11,270,200 posted last year. The session average of $29,060 was down 37.1% from the $46,189 recorded in 2007, while the median of $22,000 decreased 38.9% from last year’s $36,000. A total of 192 horses were sold compared with 244 in 2007. There were 87 horses which did not sell, for an RNA rate of 31.2%.
“There were no surprises,” said Tom Thornbury, associate director of sales. “It was on track with the rest of the sale.”
Through eight sessions, Keeneland has sold 1,589 horses for gross sales of $167,899,300, down 46.5% from the $313,574,100 paid for 1,873 horses in 2007. The average of $105,663 decreased 36.9% from $167,418, while the median of $50,000 was down 33.3% from last year’s $75,000.
Blue Sky Stables paid the day’s second-highest price of $175,000 for a colt by Borrego out of stakes-placed Wishful Legacy. The colt was consigned by John Stuart’s Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services as agent for Mueller Farms.
A colt by Sharp Humor out of the Clever Trick mare Richwood Girl was purchased by Black Hawk Bloodstock for $160,000 from the consignment of Four Star Sales, agent.
Colts by Tiznow and Afleet Alex sold for $150,000 and $140,000, respectively. Woodland Farm bought the Tiznow colt out of the Saint Ballado mare Zadkiel from consignor Eaton Sales, agent. The Afleet Alex colt out of Swift Princess, by Meadowlake, went to Diagonal Bloodstock. He was consigned by Hidden Brook, agent.
