Galileo and Golan, one-two finishers in the Epsom Derby (Eng-I), will square off Sunday in the Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-I). Galileo, conditioned by Aidan O'Brien, has four wins from four starts after posting a 3 1/2-length victory in the Epsom Derby. He is being pointed toward Belmont Park and the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships Classic (gr.-I) in October. Galileo is a son of Sadler's Wells.
Golan (Spectrum) was named a starter for the Irish Derby after Peter Reynolds, Ballymacoll Stud's manager, walked the course Thursday. Golan is conditioned by Michael Stoute. Rain continued to fall later Thursday, and the turf was termed somewhere between 'good' and 'yielding' late in the day.
After the defections of Tobougg and Perfect Sunday, a field of a dozen is set to go postward. They are: Cashel Bay, Dr Brendler, Exaltation, Galileo, Golan, Uce Dancer, March King, Morshdi, Mr Combustible, Pebble Island, Pugin, and Vinnie Roe.
