Lady Joanne, hip 381, brings $1.25 million during the Nov. 4 morning session of the Keeneland Sale.

Adena Springs’ Frank Stronach went to $1.25 million to acquire grade I winner Lady Joanne in foal to Mr. Greeley to kick start the second session of the 2008 Keeneland November breeding stock sale Nov. 4 at the Central Kentucky auction house.

Lady Joanne was consigned by Gaineway, agent for Bentley L. Smith Revocable Trust (continuing dispersal). Smith bred the 4-year-old bay mare in Kentucky.

A daughter of Orientate   out of the Unbridled mare Oatsee, Lady Joanne raced two seasons with a record of 6-2-2 from 11 starts. She earned $987,094 with trainer Carl Nafzger.

Lady Joanne’s biggest wins came in the Alabama (gr. I), Golden Rod (gr. II), and Pocahontas stakes (gr. III). She finished second in both the Mother Goose (gr. I) and Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (gr. I).

“She won the Alabama, a nice filly, just a great racehorse,” said Stronach after signing the sales ticket.

Speaking of her price, Stronach said, “When you buy, you always think you paid a little more, and when you sell you always think you get a little less. But, I was surprised that she only brought $1.25 million.”

About six hips before Lady Joanne went through the ring, Olin Gentry, on behalf of an unnamed female client from Washington state, went to $1.125 million to purchase stakes winner JZ Warrior from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent for Ahmed Zayat’s Zayat Stables.

JZ Warrior, who represented the day's first seven-figure horse, sold as a racing or broodmare prospect.

Gentry said he did not know if JZ Warrior would remain in training or if she would be sent to the breeding shed.

“She was beautiful, she was one of the best-looking broodmare/fillies out here,” Gentry said. “She has a great hind leg, a great hip, and phemonomal balance.”

JZ Warrior (Harlan’s Holiday-Carson Jen, by Carson City) was bred in Kentucky by Gulf Coast Farm. On the racetrack, JZ Warrior earned $220,813 and has a career record of 4-2-2 from 11 starts. Her stakes wins came in the Dearly Precious, Light Hearted, and House Party stakes. She finished second in the Nassau County Stakes (gr. III).

JZ Warrior is part of more than 70 horses, including racing, broodmare, stallion prospects, and a few weanlings offered by Zayat.
