(Edited press release)
Dogwood Stable’s Atoned overcame his hard luck status when he won the $200,000 Pegasus Stakes (gr. III) at the Meadowlands Oct. 24, and he now heads to the Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida where he will have an easy month before preparing for the $1-million Sunshine Millions Classic Jan.24.
“This colt has run against the best horses in the country,” said Dogwood President Cot Campbell. “We’re glad he finally got his well-deserved graded stakes victory in the Pegasus. Atoned is now going to get some relaxation time in Florida before cranking back up for his 2009 campaign.”
Atoned has earned $436,257, with three wins and seven seconds from 15 starts, 11 of them stakes races. The Repent colt finished second by a neck in both the grade II Remsen and the Grade III Tampa Bay Derby. His other second-place stakes finishes came in the Whirling Ash and Dover Stakes at Delaware Park, and the Spend A Buck and Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth Park. In five of six stakes he was beaten by less than a length cumulatively. He is trained by Todd Pletcher.
The Sunshine Million Classic is a mile and an eighth and will be run at Gulfstream Park. Dogwood Stable won the inaugural running of the Sunshine Millions Distaff with Smok’n Frolic in 2003.
