The Illinois Equine Humane Center will be holding its first fundraising event on Nov. 1 at Hawthorne Race Course in Stickney, IL, from 1 to 5 p.m.
The ILEHC will have a table located in the grandstand at Hawthorne, where race fans will be able to stop by to learn about the center and the need for Illinois racehorses to be humanely transitioned into new homes and vocations once their racing careers have ended.
In addition to the fundraiser, a special retirement ceremony will take place for the amazing Illinois bred and foaled Thoroughbred, Esther Egg. "Iggy." as he is known, was recently retired to the ILEHC Hall of Champions at the age of 13 after having raced an incredibe 11years. Iggy's final race record is amazing -- having raced 123 times and accumulating a record of 24 wins, 19 seconds, 18 thirds, and over $464,000 in lifetime earnings.
Esther Egg will be on hand for the event and will be paraded past the grandstand for one final time so that his many Illinois fans will have chance to formally wish him well in his new life and career. Saturday's racecard features Hawthorne's annual Illinois Festival of Racing, where six stakes races showcasing Illinois-bred Thoroughbreds are carded for the day.
"We couldn't think of a better day-or-way to pay tribute to this amazing Illinois-bred Iron Horse," said ILEHC President Gail Vacca.
