Meanwhile, on another sunny morning in Southern California, there were a handful of workouts, including Daytona (4 furlongs in :47 4/5), Spring House (4 furlongs in :47 4/5), Tiz Elemental (3 furlongs, :36 4/5, training track) Surf Cat (4 furlongs, :45 4/5), and Magnificience (3 furlongs, :35 1/5).

In a holdover report from Monday, trainer Ron Ellis said Believe in Hope, the third-place finisher in the grade I Norfolk, is out of the Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) after developing a temperature Sunday.

The defection of Believe in Hope means that Gallant Son, a winner of four straight races at Emerald Downs, gets into the field.

“That’s where we want to be,” said Frank Lucarelli, the trainer of Gallant Son. “It’s unfortunate for them, but it’s good for us.”
