2008 Kentucky Cup Classic winner Zanjero has been retired.

Winchell Thoroughbreds has retired grade II winner Zanjero. Plans for the 2009  breeding season have not been finalized.

After winning two of five starts and finishing second in the grade II Remsen Stakes as a juvenile, the son of Cherokee Run-Checkered Flag, by A.P. Indywent on to win the Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II), Indiana Derby (gr. II), and the West Virginia Derby (gr. III) at 3.

Over three seasons where he started 18 times and earned $1,620,000, Zanjero compiled a consistent record of six wins, five seconds, and four thirds.

In addition to his four stakes wins for  trainer Steve Asmussen, Zanjero finished third in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) and finished second or third in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II), Louisiana Derby (gr. II), Risen Star Stakes (gr. III), Northern Dancer Stakes (gr. III), Texas Mile Stakes (gr. III), and the Lone Star Park Handicap (gr. III).

Bred in Kentucky by Tony Holmes and Dr. Walter Zent, Zanjero, a $700,000 Keeneland September yearling, was produced from the unraced A.P. Indy mare Checkered Flag and is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Victory Lap and a full brother to grade II-placed Acacia.
