Stallions Blue Ensign and Globe Dead

Blue Ensign and Globe, both of whom were graded stakes winners, died recently at age 24. Blue Ensign was euthanized June 24 from complications following surgery to remove a fatty tumor from the abdominal region. The son of Hoist the Flag covered his last mare the night before the surgery at Richard Simon's Sez Who Thoroughbreds near Ocala, Fla.

A half-brother to millionaire Private Terms, Blue Ensign sired 22 stakes winners, including grade I winner Firery Ensign and additional U.S. graded winners To Freedom, Marcie's Ensign, Faultless Ensign, and Ensign Rhythm. A son of his, El Andarin, was a champion in Panama. His runners have earned $14.7 million.

Bred by Mr. and Mrs. Stuart S. Janney, Blue Ensign was produced from the Bold Ruler mare Laughter, a half-sister to the great Ruffian and major sire Icecapade. He won nine of 28 races and earned $243,065. His four stakes wins included a triumph in the 1980 Woodlawn Stakes (gr. III).

Globe, a son of Secretariat out of French champion Hippodamia (by Hail to Reason), died June 11. Bred by Nelson Bunker Hunt, Globe won the 1982 Excelsior (gr. II) and Grey Lag (gr. III) Handicaps in New York, and was retired with six wins from 20 starts and earnings of $212,533

Globe sired five stakes winners and lived out his last years at Pembrooke Farm near Longview, Texas.
