Borodislew, a successful California racemare and later a multiple stakes producer, was euthanized in August because of complications from colic at Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Stud near Ocala, Fla. An 18-year-old daughter of Seattle Slew, she produced a Smarty Jones   colt in February for Live Oak. The colt is at the farm and is doing fine, according to a farm representative.

A Kentucky-bred, Borodislew was a group winner in France before she was returned to North America after two years of racing. Based in California and campaigned by Marshall Naify’s 505 Farms, Borodislew competed against the likes of such top racemares as Serena’s Song, Paseana, Inside Information, Different, Top Rung, Jewel Princess, Heavenly Prize, Halo America, and Lakeway.

In consecutive starts in 1995, she beat Lakeway in winning the Chula Vista Handicap (gr. II), and won the Lady’s Secret Handicap (gr. III) over Top Rung. She then tried the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I) but ran unplaced.

In 1996, Borodislew defeated Jewel Princess in winning the Hawthorne Handicap (gr. II).

Bred by Janus Bloodstock, Borodislew retired with 10 wins from 28 starts and earnings of $679,781. She was trained by John Shirreffs and Eduardo Inda.

Live Oak bought Borodislew for $750,000 at the 2000 Keeneland November breeding stock sale after she had produced three foals. In foal to Bertrando, Borodislew was consigned by Narvick International, agent for 505 Farms, Estate of Marshall Naify.

Borodislew produced a total of eight named foals, six of which were winners, including stakes winners Canadian Frontier, Seeking Slew, and Slewfoundmoney. The first two were graded winners. Borodislew’s other offspring is an Aldebaran yearling colt.

Borodislew, who was produced from French group winner Breath Taking (by Nureyev), was in foal to Strategic Mission at the time of her death.
