Ruffian Handicap (gr. I) winner Tough Tiz's Sis was scheduled to undergo surgery Sept. 21 after she suffered a career ending injury during a workout at Belmont Park a morning earlier.
Tonja Terranova, who oversees trainer Bob Baffert’s horses in New York, said Tough Tiz's Sis sustained what appears to be the beginning of a condylar fracture to her right front leg. The injury occurred near the end of a five-furlong workout when she took a bad step.
“Dr. Patti Hogan (New Jersey Equine Center) will put in a screw,” said Terranova. “She is going to be fine.”
While horses often return from such an injury, owners Karl Watson and Paul Weitman and Baffert elected to retire the 4-year-old daughter of Tiznow , who won eight of 20 starts for earnings of $903,792.
Tough Tiz's Sis ran the best race of her career in the Sept. 6 Ruffian, a 12 1/4-length victory over a sloppy track. It was her second grade I victory, the other coming in the Lady's Secret at Oak Tree's Santa Anita meet last fall.
Seventh in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) after being supplemented for $180,000 following the Lady's Secret, she had been scheduled to return to Southern California this week.
