Blue Sky Holiday broke a nine-race losing skid at Hastings Park by winning the $133,793 British Columia Breeders' Cup Oaks (Can-III) (VIDEO) in Vancouver, Canada, on Sept. 20.
Ridden by Chad Hoverson, the Florida-bred daughter of Victory Gallop, rallied between horses on the final turn to gain the lead from pacesetting Infinite Wealth. Blue Sky Holiday cleared away in the short homestretch for a solid 1 3/4-length victory.
Sent off at odds of 5-2, Blue Sky Holiday covered the 1 1/8-mile distance on a sealed wet fast track in 1:52.32.
Infinite Wealth, a 14-1 shot ridden by Fernando Perez, was a clear second by nearly three lengths over the 7-10 choice Lecturing Lynn, who had a stalking trip while three or four paths wide under David Wilson before she tired in the final stages. Infinite Wealth, who fought for the early lead with Answerwithvictory, established fractions of :22.85, :47.67 and 1:13.89 as Blue Sky Holiday tracked in fourth for most of the race.
Trained by John Snow for owners Thomas and Tracy Bell, L. MacLeod and Dale Michaud, Blue Sky Holiday was coming off a second-place finish to Lecturing Lynn in Hastings' 1 1/16-mile Hong King Jockey Club Aug. 30. She was defeated by one length on a fast track that day.
While this was her first win at Hastings, she had four runner-up finishes and two shows there previously. This was her fifth win in 10 starts in 2008, the others coming at Portland Meadows in Oregon. Her last victory was by seven lengths in the Oregon Oaks March 11.
Overall, the hard-working miss is 5-6-4 in 18 lifetime starts. Her first graded win was worth $82,059, more than doubling her earnings. Pia Kirkham bred the winner, a $25,000 Ocala Breeders' Sale buy in August 2006. She is out of the Rahy mare Dancing Pratella.
Blue Sky Holiday paid $7, $5.20 and $2.50. Infinite Wealth, trained by Mel Snow, returned $14.30 and $4.90 while completing a $2 exacta worth $60.60. Lecturing Lynn, who had won three of her past four races, all Canadian stakes for trainer L.T. McCarthy, was $2.40 to show.
Answerwithvictory, Summer Song, Broken Hearted and Mozambique followed. Heaven On Hold scratched.
