Trailing the field for three-quarters of a mile, Soldier's Dancer made a late surge to emerge with a two-length victory in the $250,000 PTHA President's Cup over a yielding turf course at Philadelphia Park Sept. 13.

Manoel Cruz guided the 4-year-old Florida-bred son of Lost Soldier to an impressive win over the outsider Ballonenostrikes, who nosed Interpatation in a four-horse blanket finish for the runner-up spot. Drum Major, the 7-5 favorite in the field of eight, finished fourth.

David Vivian trains the winner for owner Herman Heinlein. Soldier's Dancer was a two-time grade III winner on the Calder Race Course turf last year. The gray or roan gelding was bred in Florida by Franks Farm.

Soldier's Dancer won for the eighth time in 24 starts and increased his earnings to $874,180 with the $150,000 winner's share in the President's Cup. He has six blacktype stakes wins in his career.

Cruz was unhurried on the winner as Delaware River set the early pace, carving dawdling fractions of :26.65, :53.26 and 1:18.38 over the yielding ground. Soldier's Dancer angled out as he rallied into the stretch and offered an explosive burst in the final stages to draw clear of Ballonenostrikes, who had assumed the lead briefly in the lane for Carlos Cruz. Ballonenostrikes held on gamely for second over Interpatation, ridden by Jose Espinoza. They finished a head in front of Drum Major, who was outfought late after reaching contention. In was a neck to fifth-place finisher Distorted Reality, who was followed by Electricity, Delaware River and Victory Alleged.

The final time was 1:54.69.

Sent off as the third choice, the Florida-based Soldier's Dancer paid $9.80, $4.40 and $3.60. Ballonenostrikes returned $9.80 and $4.60. Interpatation was $3.20 to show.

Soldier's Dancer came into the race off a second-place finish as the heavy favorite in Band Is Passing Stakes at Calder Aug. 16.

Silver Tree scratched in favor of the Monmouth Stakes.
