Jockey Juan Campos died Aug. 16 from injuries suffered in a racing accident at the Downs at Albuquerque that same day.
Campos fell off of his mount, Kant Talk, during a 330-yard Quarter Horse race at the New Mexico track. The 2-year-old filly tripped and fell over him, causing a fatal head injury as well as other internal injuries.
It was Campos’ first mount of the Albuquerque meet.
“In 26 years, I don’t remember a rider getting killed here,” Downs at Albuquerque general manager Don Cook said. “It’s an ugly reminder of how dangerous the sport is.”
