Philpott Joins Lexington Equine Law Firm

The Lexington-based law firm Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC announced that James A. Philpott Jr. has joined its equine law practice.

Philpott has served the Thoroughbred industry in various roles for more than 30 years. Prior to joining the firm, Philpott was a solo practitioner with an emphasis on the syndication of Thoroughbreds.

Philpott is also one of the three members of the initial board of directors of The Breeders’ Cup on which he has served in addition to being an officer of the company since its formation in 1980.

A native of Lexington, Virg., Philpott is a graduate of Washington and Lee University School of Law. Philpott’s involvement with the Thoroughbred industry began in 1978 when he assisted the Kentucky secretary of agriculture in developing the original code of practice for contagious equine metritus, a venereal disease of horses.

Philpott began his multinational joint venture practice at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York, and moved to Kentucky in 1980 to become executive vice president and general counsel of Gainesway Farm. He also served as vice president and general counsel of Live Foal Co. from 1986 to 1990. Philpott returned to full-time private practice in 1991. He has syndicated more than 190 stallions to stand at stud farms located in nine states and seven countries.
