Frank Deford, himself a member of the National Association of Sporstcasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame, will be the keynote speaker at this years National Musuem of Racing and Hall of Fame inductiion ceremony. The new members of the Hall of Fame will be enshrined at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 6 at the Fasig-Tipton sale pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.Deford is known for his articles in Sports Illustrated, and he currently is prominent as a regular commentator on National Public Radio and HBO's RealSports With Bryant Gumbel. He has written 13 books, two of which -- Everybody's All-American and Alex: The Life Of A Child -- have been made into movies. Another, Casey on the Loose, is being adapted for Broadway.Deford won Eclipse Awards in 1975 and 1984 for Sports Illustrated articles on Thoroughbred racing, and he has been elected by his peers as Sportswriter of the Year six times. He also has been voted Magazine Writer of the Year by the Washington Journalism Review, and his many other awards include an Emmy, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the Christopher Award.Following Deford's remarks, the Hall of Fame will induct jockey Earlie Fires, trainer Richard Mandella, and the horses Holy Bull, Paseana, and Maskette. Also formally honored will be trainer Tom Smith, whose election to the Hall of Fame was announced last year. The induction ceremonies are free and open to the public.
