The first race at Canterbury Park July 13 was a tour de force for Late Edition. The Minnesota stallion, who stands at Rick and Joyce Osborne’s Osborne Farm near Cambridge, finished one-two-three and sixth with his four starters.

“It was so exciting,” Joyce Osborne said about the six-furlong maiden-claimer for fillies and mares. “It was a once in a lifetime thrill.”

The winner, Storybook Doll, was bred by Rick Osborne and his parents, D. John and Vera Osborne. The other three were bred by members of the Osborne family, including one in partnership with Curtis A. Sampson. All four have different owners.

Storybook Doll, who races for Robin Fauchald, won by 7 3/4 lengths over early pacesetter Most Useful, with Bubbly Bubbles third. Canterbury Rose finished sixth.

As impressive as the finish was, it could have been even better. “At the half-mile, they filled the top four spots,” Joyce Osborne said. “What was really nice was that Rick and his parents were invited to the winner’s circle.”

Unfortunately for Joyce Osborne, she stayed home to care for an ill family member.

Thirteen-year-old Late Edition (Cryptoclearance—Starlet Storm, by Storm Bird) has stood his entire career at Osborne Farm and is represented by five winners from 14 runners. Twice graded stakes-placed, he is a half-brother to champion filly Flanders. Late Edition stands for $1,250.
