Ridden by Eibar Coa, the gray Ontario-bred colt remained unbeaten in four starts on dirt and atoned for the only loss of his career, a well-beaten fourth-place finish in the Queen's Plate Trial Stakes on Woodbine's Polytrack surface June 10.
Harlem Rocker tracked the pace in fifth under Coa, who has ridden the son of Macho Uno in all of his starts. Harlem Rocker made his bid three wide into the far turn and took the lead into the stretch. East End Tap, circling the field for Elvis Trujillo coming off the turn, drew nearly even with Harlem Rocker but could get no closer as Harlem Rocker, driving from the rail, pushed back to win by 1 1/4 lengths.
East End Tap, sent off at 20-1, was nearly four lengths in front of the show horse, 37-1 Pronger, ridden by Chad Beckon. Queen's Plate winner Not Bourbon, pressed the pace for Jono Jones as the 11-10 choice in the field of seven, but faded to sixth in the stretch.
The final time for the 1 3/16-mile test for 3-year-olds was 1:56.46 on a fast track.
Pewter set a reasonable pace of :24.09, :47.40 and 1:11.98 before quickly giving way.
Harlem Rocker earned $297,240 for his connections and has now banked $445,799 in his career. The Adena Springs homebred is out of Freedom Come, by Lit de Justice.
Harlem Rocker won the Withers Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct April 26 and was being aimed for the Queen's Plate before his dull effort in the Plate Trial and a subsequent work over the Woodbine synthetic surface that fell short of expectations.
Edged narrowly for favoritism by Not Bourbon, Harlem Rocker paid $4.30, $3.40 and $2.50, topping a $2 exacta worth $47.30 with East End Tap, who returned $13.30 and $6.30. Pronger was $7.40 to show while part of a $2 trifecta paying $682.50.
Sebastian's Song, Deputiformer, Not Bourbon and Pewter completed the order. Took the Time scratched. All carried 126 pounds.
