Golden Spikes, on the Triple Crown trail earlier this year, is beginning to find a niche as a sprinter, as he captured the $250,000 Carry Back Stakes (gr. III) (VIDEO)  July 12 at Calder Race Course for his second win in a row.

A 3-year-old son of Seeking the Gold, Golden Spikes scored his first graded stakes in four tries in his three-quarters-length win. Coming four-wide into the stretch under Elvis Trujillo, the bay colt ran down pacesetter Gentleman James inside the sixteenth-pole. With Manny Aguilar aboard, Gentleman James held second. Lantana Mob was another half-length back in third.

The final time for six furlongs on the fast main track was 1:11.20.

Owned by M375 Thoroughbreds and Suarez Racing Stable, Golden Spikes entered off a narrow victory in the June 14 Unbridled Stakes at Calder. His best effort in four graded stakes efforts this season was the April 5 Illinois Derby (gr. II), when he finished runner-up and four lengths back of Recapturetheglory. Trainer Marty Wolfson sent Golden Spikes to the nine-furlong Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) May 10 at Belmont, but he tired in the stretch.

In the Carry Back, Gentleman James grabbed the early lead, as he fought off Carson’s Legacy and Golden Spikes in a :22.86 first quarter. Hypocrite was also never far back in a bunched up field of eight. Trujillo had to steer Golden Spikes towards the outside as they came into the stretch, and although two lengths back in fourth at the eighth-pole, he closed willingly to get up late.

“They didn’t go as fast as I would have liked to see them go up front, but I could see that they were moving too soon on the backside so I just sat behind them and waited," Trujillo said. "With this horse the later you move the better he finishes. He is a very nice horse and six furlongs is perfect for him.”

Bred in Kentucky by Robert Evans, Golden Spikes is out of the A.P. Indymare A.P. Interest. He was purchased for $250,000 at the Keeneland 2006 September yearling sale. Now 4-2-0 from 10 starts, Golden Spikes has earned $372,095.

Going off as the favorite, Golden Spikes paid $4.60, $3.20 and $2.40. The exacta (2-4) paid $20.80, while the trifecta (2-4-7) was worth $58.40.

Hypocrite finished fourth, followed by Salute the Sarge, Make Me Zach, Carson’s Legacy and Successful Love.
