Tattersalls July Sale Figures Decline

Tattersalls’ July sale finished in Newmarket, England, July 11 with figures notably down from 2007. The gross of 7,515,200 guineas dropped by 31%, the average price of 14,823guineas fell by 20%, and the median of 7,900 guineas declined 28%.

Five hundred and seven horses were sold.

There was a healthy crowd at Park Paddocks all week, and it was likely that a lack of class lots in the mixed catalog, rather than economic circumstances, was responsible for the downturn.

"The figures are down on last year’s July sale, which is no surprise in the present economic climate, but there have been a number of positives to take out of this week’s trade," said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony. "The catalog probably lacked a few stars amongst the horses in training compared with recent years but the turnover of well in excess of seven million guineas and the average of around 15,000 guineas are the third highest for this fixture behind only the July sales of 2006 and 2007.

"The demand from overseas buyers has been the outstanding feature of the past four days and the clearance rate of more than 80% has yet again demonstrated the enduring appeal of the July sale."

Four-year-old Shela House (by Selkirk), offered from James Fanshawe’s stable, topped the final day’s trade. The gelding was bought for 87,000 guineas  by John Butler, representing agent Gerry Hogan, and will now be aimed at Ireland’s Galway Festival.
