Blood-Horse Publications has hired pedigree analyst Matt O’Neil as the new national sales manager for TrueNicks, a Thoroughbred pedigree statistics and research firm.

O’Neil will be responsible for national and international sales of the TrueNicks pedigree rating products, which rates the compatibility of a sire line with mares from another sire line.

Unlike other systems that are calculated on the basis of hypothetical opportunity among a limited group of horses, the TrueNicks rating utilizes the constantly updated database of The Jockey Club to produce a rating based on all foals for a given cross.

Educated at the State University of New York at Cobleskill and the University of Louisville, O’Neil spent time working for trainers Frank LaBocetta and Tom Skiffington at Saratoga, Keeneland, and Churchill Downs. He served two years as a senior pedigree analyst for Werk Thoroughbred Consultants before moving on to the stallion division at Taylor Made Farm as stallion administrator and pedigree analyst.

More recently O'Neil has been a freelance writer, with his work appearing in The Blood-Horse MarketWatch, Thoroughbred Times, Thoroughbred Daily News, Owner-Breeder International, and The Florida Horse. He is also the former managing editor of Owner-Breeder International, a pedigree newsletter acquired by Blood-Horse Publications in June 2008.
