The Model Rules Committee of Racing Commissioners International (RCI) will consider recommendations from The Jockey Club’s Welfare and Safety Committee during its next meeting, which is scheduled for Aug. 1. The meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. (EDT), will be held in the library of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The specific recommendations that will be examined by the RCI committee, which is chaired by Larry Eliason of South Dakota, involve further limitations on toe grabs in Thoroughbred racing and a proposed safety riding crop rule. The committee also will consider proposed changes in model claiming rules to require that claims be voided under certain conditions and circumstances as well as a requirement that there be a continuing education requirement for trainers and other racing licensees.

The text of proposed model rules are posted on the RCI website (www.arci.com) and comments from interested individuals and organizations are encouraged.   Comments on proposed model rules should be sent to:   Model Rules Committee, Racing Commissioners International, 2343 Alexandria Drive, Suite 200, Lexington, KY  40504 or they can be emailed to rules@arci.com.
