Colonial Downs fifth annual Thoroughbred meet, which begins July 3 and runs through Aug. 7, will feature 13 stakes races worth $780,000 and is highlighted by the fourth running of the $200,000 Virginia Derby on July 14. A new addition to the stakes lineup for 2001 is the $30,000 Lee and Grant Stakes run on July 4. The Lee and Grant is a unique event open to both Virginia and West Virginia-bred horses. It's tied to the Oct. 27 Blue-Gray Stakes at Charles Town in the Chenin Blanc Challenge, which offers a $10,000 bonus if a horse can win both. ...Peter F. Karches was elected vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New York Racing Association. Karches will share the position with Timothy M. McGinn and Joseph V. Shields Jr. ...The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2001 June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age under tack show gets underway June 16 & 17, with both sessions starting at 9:00 a.m. The sale is scheduled for Tuesday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 20. Both sessions are continuous and begin at 11:00 a.m. Hip No.'s 1 -234, selling Tuesday, June 19, will breeze on Saturday. Hip No.'s 235-467, selling Wednesday, June 20, will breeze on Sunday. ...The Board of Directors of The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. (TJCIS) has announced the addition of four new board members. They are: Reynolds Bell Jr., C. Steven Duncker, John W. Phillips and Carl Hamilton, who has served as president of TJCIS since 1994, has been named chairman of TJCIS, replacing Allan Dragone, who recently retired. Hamilton will now serve as chairman and president of the company.....WinStar Farm has named Jack Mullikin as corporate controller. Mullikin served as corporate controller for Frederick Van Lennep's Castleton Farm for the last 20 years. Prior to that, he spent eight years in the public sector with the Ernest & Young accounting company...The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Hilary M. Weston will be the Royal representative at the 142nd running of the $1 million Queen's Plate at Woodbine on Sunday, June 24. ... Post time for the Queen's Plate has been set. The race will go at 5:08 p.m. and be the ninth of 11 on the card. The six furlong-Nearctic Stakes will go as the sixth race at 3:13 p.m. First race post-time on Plate day has also been shifted back to 12:25 p.m. from it original 12:55 p.m. spot. Wagering windows opens at noon.
