The Ontario division of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society honored the Ontario-bred champions of 2007 at its annual awards dinner held at Glencairn Golf Club, in Milton, Ontario June 13.

The event recognized partners Mike Carroll and John Harvey Jr. as the year’s top breeders, and the late Tammy Samuel-Balaz as 2007 recipient of The Blood-Horse Mint Julep Cup award.

Other highlights included the presentation of 91 awards to the Ontario breeders of historical grade I Canadian or open graded stakes and the Ontario-bred stakes winners of 2007.

Four stallions received awards based on their 2007 earnings of eligible progeny, with first place presented to Bold Executive, second to Bold N’ Flashy, and third to Tethra. Ciano Cat received the award for leading first crop sire.

Four CTHS Ontario members were recognized for their 25-year contribution to the Thoroughbred breeding industry, while Melnyk Racing Stable received The Jockey Club of Canada Award as leading owner.

A silent auction also took place during the evening in support of LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement, one of the first adoption and placement programs for Thoroughbred racehorses in Ontario.
