Irish Stallion Charnwood Forest Euthanized
Irish stallion Charnwood Forest was euthanized June 11 after breaking a leg while exercising at Liam Cashman's Rathbarry Stud in County Cork. A champion miler in England as a 4-year-old, he had covered some 60 mares this year and was buried at the farm.Charnwood Forest (Warning--Dance of Leaves, by Sadler's Wells) initially raced for his breeder, Sheikh Mohammed, then later was transferred to the Maktoum family's Godolphin. From 11 starts, Charnwood Forest won four races and ran second four times. He captured the Queen Anne (Eng-II) and Challenge (Eng-II) Stakes and ran second in three group I events. He was unplaced in the 1996 Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) in his final start and was retired with $387,162 in earnings,Cashman privately purchased Charnwood Forest for stallion duty and syndicated him. Charnwood Forest's oldest runners are 3-year-olds.
