There is a chance Big Brown may have to do something he has never done before if he is to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner.

Obviously, he will have to win at 1 ½ miles, but that is for sure. But, he may have to win on a sloppy track and the weather, as we all know, is never for sure.

The track at Belmont Park is rated sloppy for June 4 and the races are off the turf. Overnight rains in the area left things soaked on the backside for training hours and the main track rated sloppy for racing in the afternoon.

Big Brown, owned by IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa Jr., won his first race on a firm turf course at Saratoga last fall. He has then reeled off four wins this year for trainer Rick Dutrow on dirt surfaces all rated fast.

The forecast in Elmont, N.Y. , is calling for a 30% chance of rain Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The highest chance for rain Thursday is at night, and Friday and Saturday calls for isolated thunderstorms.

The high temperature is to be 71 on Thursday, 81 on Friday , and on Belmont day Saturday, 85.

The last Belmont on a sloppy track was 2003, when Empire Maker won over Ten Most Wanted and Funny Cide.
