Keep the Peace, who finished just a neck behind in the La Troienne, meets a similar field in the Dogwood.
Add a little more distance and throw in a few extra runners, and a rerun of the May 3 La Troienne Stakes (gr. III) is essentially what you’ll have in the $100,000 Dogwood (gr. III) at Churchill Downs.
The May 31 event for 3-year-old fillies is a mile rather than 7 ½ furlongs, and three horses who did not compete in the La Troienne will contest this event. But those newcomers are outnumbered by the second, third, fourth, and fifth-place finishers in the La Troienne, minus the winning Game Face.
First on the list of La Troienne runners to tackle the Dogwood is Gary and Mary West’s Keep the Peace, a Touch Gold
filly bred in New York by Berkshire Stud out of the Carson City mare Look Upon. Trained by Eddie Kenneally, Keep the Peace missed the La Troienne score by a neck after chasing the pace, swinging four wide into the turn, grabbing the lead, and yielding late. Both of this filly’s two career scores have come on the front end, with wire-to-wire victories at Churchill and Gulfstream at the end of last year and beginning of this season. She was also second in the Forward Gal Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park in February. The Dogwood will be her first start at the one-mile distance.
Third in the La Troienne, back by 2 ¼ lengths, was William Wahl’s Tiz to Dream. A daughter of Tiznow
bred in Kentucky by Marjorie and Allen Schubert out of the Carson City mare Littelfuse, Tiz to Dream went into that race off back-to-back wins. She broke her maiden going a mile at Gulfstream March 15, then claimed a 1 1/6-mile allowance score at Keeneland April 13. Both wins came from off the pace.
Fourth and fifth in the La Troienne were Savorthetime Stables’ Alina, trained by Steve Asmussen, and Richland Hills Stable and John Kuehl’s Secret Gypsy, trained by Ronny Werner.
Alina, a daughter of Came Home, has a stakes score to her credit already this year – she won the Green Oaks stakes in a wire-to-wire move at Delta Downs March 1, then ran second to Eight Belles in Oaklawn Park’s April 6 Fantasy Stakes (gr. II) after leading but being caught by just three-quarters of a length in the 1 1/16-mile event.
Secret Gypsy, by Sea of Secrets, had only a maiden debut going 5 ½ furlongs to her credit when she entered the La Troienne. Still, that score came impressively – by 6 ¼ lengths.
Acoma, a back-to-back maiden and allowance winner for trainer David Carroll; Pious Ashley, fifth in the May 16 Black Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) last time out for Dale Romans; and the George Arnold-trained Temper Temper complete the field.
