Canadian-bred Rahy’s Attorney, who has made all 13 of his lifetime starts at Woodbine, earned his biggest victory to date May 25, as he kicked clear at the top of the lane and went on to take the $166,050 Connaught Cup (Can-III) (VIDEO) under Slade Callaghan by a half-length at odds of 16-1.
A 4-year-old Crown Attorney gelding, Rahy’s Attorney held off a late bid by Society’s Chairman, who came from off the pace under Jono Jones to get second, 1 3/4 lengths in front of French Beret. The final time for the eight and a half furlongs on the Woodbine turf was 1:39.53.
A homebred of Ellie-Boje Farm, Rahy’s Attorney entered the Connaught Cup off a seventh-place effort in allowance-optional claiming company April 24 on the Polytrack, his season debut. That race was no indication of his talent however, as the bay has done his best running on turf. In 2007, Rahy’s Attorney won four of five starts on the grass, including the Vice Regent and Bunty Lawless Stakes, both at a mile. The Connaught Cup was his first try in graded competition. He is trained by Ian Black.
Jiggs Coz set the pace, out-battling Touch by Madness in the early going to lead by a half-length. The half-mile was run in :46.81. Also close up were Shillelagh Slew, Rahy’s Attorney, and Society’s Chairman.
Ridden by David Clark, Jiggs Coz continued to lead through six furlongs in 1:10.32, but Rahy’s Attorney was in a stalking position from the rail and took over as he came out of the turn. He was clear in upper stretch, but had to hold off a strong late run by Society’s Chairman from the middle of the racetrack.
Rahy’s Attorney, who is out of the Rahy mare Rahy's Hope, has now won six times for Ellie-Boje and co-owners Read Peters, and Jean and Jim MacLellan. He has earned $401,308.
The winner paid $34.10, $12.20 and $6.80. The exacta (9-6) returned $245.20, while the trifecta (9-6-5) was worth $1,105.20.
Artie Hot finished fourth, followed by betting favorite Royal Oath, Shillelagh Slew, Skipped Bail, Moonshine Hall, Jiggs Coz, Touched by Madness, and Good and Lucky.
