(From Calder Race Course)
Rolbea Thoroughbreds’ 4-year-old homebred Finallymadeit was the ‘Iron Horse’ of South Florida last year. He made 19 starts with eight victories and four seconds, earned $362,000, and all but one of those starts came in sprint races for trainer Javier Negrete.
However, Finallymadeit ran very well in his only try going a distance in 2007 when second in the Ambehaving in August behind Electrify, the clear leader of the handicap division at Calder Race Course last year. He also performed well again trying two turns a second time here last out on May 4 when runner-up by a half-length behind Imawildandcrazyguy in the Sumter after leading to the final strides.
Finallymadeit will try a distance for the third time May 26 in the $36,000 Memorial Day Stakes at 1 1/16 miles with regular rider Eduardo Nunez aboard in a field of nine. The chestnut son of Concerto shows only a second and a third from five starts this year, but there were mitigating circumstances for three sub-par efforts.
After finishing a respectable third behind Noonmark and Mach Ride in the Mr. Prospector Handicap (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park in early January, he tired to ninth on a ‘sloppy’ track in the Sunshine Millions Sprint won by Benny the Bull.
In his next outing, Finallymadeit obviously didn’t handle the new synthetic track at the Ocala Training Center in February when ninth in the Florida Thoroughbred Charities and the usually very consistent performer didn’t run a step when last of 12 in the $214,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint Apr. 26 in his first and likely last career try on grass.
Five of Finallymadeit’s rivals in the Memorial Day finished well behind him last out in the Sumter, but he faces a threat from other contenders, including Rose Family Stable’s 4-year-old Hal’s My Hope, and Richard Averill and Stephen White’s 6-year-old gelding Dartagnans’spirit.
Jockey David Boraco rides Hal’s My Hope for trainer Barry Rose and has the credentials to win on his best form. The 4-year-old homebred colt by Halo's Image hasn’t run since finishing ninth in the Calder Derby (gr. II) last October. Early last year he was competitive against division leaders on the main track at Gulfstream and won the Unbridled Stakes at Calder by 12 lengths.
Like Finallymadeit, D’artagnans’spirit established his reputation sprinting with nine victories in 29 career starts, most recently finishing seventh with a rough trip in the Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint April 26. However, the Kirk Ziadie-trained son of Secret Hello was tried over a distance a few times earlier in his career without hitting the board.
Completing the field for Memorial Day are J. Robert Harris, Jr.’s Rehoboth, Drs. K.K. and V.D. Jayaraman’s Finance Minister, Lewis Family Partnership’s Voorhee’s Ballad, Bea Oxenberg’s Notgonagetemtoday, Robert Dubois’ Pop Goes the Tiger and Rose Family Stable’s Rexson’s Rose, who will be coupled with Hal’s My Hope.
