Lantana Mob equaled the six-furlong track record at Pimlico May 17 when he ran down Silver Edition for a neck victory in the $100,000 Hirsch Jacobs Stakes (gr. III) (VIDEO
) on the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) undercard.
The Steve Asmussen trainee, fresh off an April 6 win in Oaklawn Park’s Bachelor Stakes, went six furlongs in 1:09.10 to share Pimlico's six-furlong record with Northern Wolf, who set the mark in 1990. A son of Posse
owned by Vinery Stables and Tom Ludt, Lantana Mob also set a stakes mark in the Hirsch Jacobs, for which the previous best time was 1:09.72 run by Songster in 2006. He is now a four-time stakes winner, having annexed the Tyro and Sapling Stakes (gr. III) at Monmouth Park last year in addition to last month's Bachelor win.
Favored Lantana Mob was sixth at the start in the Hirsch Jacobs, a race led from the break by the freakish Force Freeze. Force Freeze's explosive move from the gate carried him well to the front of the field in the opening strides as he was chased by 11-1 shot Indy Joe. They went a quarter in :22.86 and a half in :45.17, while Silver Edition ran third and maiden winner Commandeered was fourth.
The field swung off the turn with three horses abreast – Force Freeze, Silver Edition, and Indy Joe. Lantana Mob, then fourth under jockey Robby Albarado, was carried four wide into the stretch and looked like he could be beaten as Silver Edition claimed a short lead mid-stretch. Closing down the center of the track while drifting out slightly, however, Lantana Mob powered down to eke out the victory. It was one length back to Force Freeze, who finished third over Indy Joe by another neck.
“They were going quick up front," Albarado said. "We bided our time and let things unfold, just like Steve Asmussen and I talked about. We didn’t get by until three jumps from the wire but I knew I had him. He showed he had a big punch.”
“I can’t believe he got beat," jockey Edgar Prado said of the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Silver Edition. "I knew (Lantana Mob) was gaining on me, but when I took the lead I thought I was clear. My horse ran a good race, though.”
The bettors’ choice at odds of 8-5, Lantana Mob returned $5.60, $3.20, and $2.40 while Silver Edition brought $4.20 and $3 and Force Freeze paid $2.80 with M. Clifton Berry. Indy Joe, Commandeered, Sheeler, Izzy Speaking, and Loveyouintheworld completed the field. Shoe Freak Marlene scratched.
Lantana Mob was bred in Kentucky by Thomas, Burleson and Visagie out of the Copelan mare Lantana. He now has a 5-1-1 record from nine starts, with earnings of $309,048.
