Jockey Caught With Electrical Device

Jockey Glenn Murphy has been suspended 180 days and fined $2,500 for possession of an electrical device at Lone Star Park, according to the Star-Telegram.

After Murphy waived his right to a hearing, Lone Star’s board of stewards issued the ruling of his suspension May 3.

Local Department of Public Safety officers discovered an electrical shocking device during a compliance inspection May 1, according to Texas Racing Commission investigator Charlie Hallam, who said the device was found in Murphy's car after he entered the stable area.

Possession of such a device at a racetrack, which is used to shock horses into racing at higher speeds, is illegal. Murphy was arrested by Grand Prairie police and charged with a misdemeanor, Hallam said.

A 40-year-old native of El Paso, Murphy has been a jockey since 1984. He holds a lifetime record of 2,345 victories from 18,423 starts. In 2000, he was the leading jockey at Lone Star.

He also has topped the jockeys' standings at Sunland Park (1990-91), Ruidoso Downs (1992), and Sam Houston (1999-2000).
