ReRun, the Thoroughbred adoption group, is having a Moneigh auction on Ebay that ends the day after the May 3 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). The auction’s theme will be “Kentucky Derby Champions” and will highlight pieces of equine created artwork by Thoroughbred champions that have won the Derby. Included will be superstars such as 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones , 2003 winner Funny Cide, as well as Dynaformer, sire of 2006 Derby hero Barbaro. The auction also features 1982 Derby winner Gato Del Sol, who died last year.
The auction will also feature the last Moneigh by John Henry that will be offered on Ebay to the public.
Another Moneigh painting by John Henry sold for a record winning bid of $5,200 during ReRun’s holiday auction. That painting was done by dipping John Henry’s tail in multi colored paint and swishing it across the artist’s pad. Most Moneighs are done by placing nontoxic paint on the horse’s muzzle and then encouraging him or her to smudge their artistic talents on the paper. A lock of the artist’s mane or tail is often attached with a color coordinating ribbon or a hoof print autograph.
The Moneighs are quite popular with racing fans and have been an important part of ReRun’s fundraising efforts to raise money and awareness for their adoption program. ReRun has chapters in Kentucky, New Jersey, and New York . For more information please go to www.rerun.org.
