ReRun, the Thoroughbred adoption group, is offering a “Moneigh” auction on Ebay through May 4. The auction, titled “Old Timers and Legends,” highlights pieces of equine-created artwork by Thoroughbred champions over the age of 20.
Among the “artists” is 1988 Breeder’s Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Gulch and 23-year-old Dynaformer, sire of Barbaro. The auction of 16 paintings includes other legends such as Cigar, Funny Cide, Da Hoss, Gato Del Sol, and Smarty Jones .
The auction features the last Moneigh by John Henry that will be offered on Ebay to the public. Another Moneigh painting by John Henry sold for a record-winning bid of $5,200 during ReRun’s holiday auction.
Most Moneighs are done by placing non-toxic paint on the horse’s muzzle and encouraging him or her to smudge the paper. A lock of the horse’s mane or tail is often attached with a color-coordinating ribbon or a hoof-print autograph.
The Moneighs have been an important part of ReRun’s efforts to raise money and awareness for its program.
