Colonel John's work was the fourth-fastest of 38 works at the distance, according to Equibase. Colonel John worked handily. Watch Kathy Harty’s video of Colonel John’s workout here.
Trained by Eoin Harty, Colonel John emerged at the West Coast’s top Triple Crown hopeful when he rallied smartly in the stretch to win the April 5 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). The Tiznow colt now has $825,300 in earnings and figures among the favorites for the May 3 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) at Churchill Downs.
Harty said Colonel John, who has only raced on synthetic surfaces, would have a work on the Churchill dirt in preparation for the Derby. “He went super,” Harty said of Colonel John. “He’ll probably have his final workout here (April 20) at five furlongs, and ship to Kentucky April 21.”
Bob Black Jack, wearing blinkers for the first time and with David Flores in the saddle, went in company with stablemate Itsnotjustagame for trainer James Kasparoff. Bob Black Jack, a California-bred by Stormy Jack, was second behind Colonel John in the Santa Anita Derby.
Bob Black Jack is owned by Kasparoff's brother, Tim, and Jeff Harmon.
“He worked good with the blinkers on,” Flores said. “They’re little cheaters--not much--but I think they helped the horse focus. He went straight when he went by the other horse. Normally when he passes horses, he wants to lug in or out, but he went straight, so that’s a good sign."
