Doncaster’s April 10 breeze-up sale in England  -- featuring 50 fewer lots than in 2007 and reduced from two days to one -- was dominated by a couple of purchases made by agent David Loder on behalf of Godolphin.

Former trainer Loder paid £200,000 for an Exceed And Excel colt, which had cost just 12,000 guineas as a yearling, and £180,000 for a Tobougg filly, which had realized 38,000 guineas last year. Both look set to join the Maktoum family’s Godolphin stable in Newmarket under the guidance of trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

Con Marnane’s Bansha House Stables in County Tipperary, Ireland, sold the Exceed And Excel colt while Willie Browne’s nearby Mocklershill Stables sold the Tobougg.

The £3,288,500 gross fell 32%. The average price of £28,595 and median price of £22,000 declined  9.9% and 8.9, respectively. The clearance rate was 82%.

"The DBS breeze-up sales have been one of the great successes of the company over the years and we are very satisfied with today’s trade which has been remarkably buoyant given the gloomy economic outlook at home and abroad," said Doncaster Bloodstock Sales managing director Henry Beeby. "There is little doubt the bloodstock market is extremely selective at the moment -- you only have to look at the clearance rates at some of the breeze-up sales in America -- and DBS has not been immune, but quality has shone through and there has been real and lively competition for those that breezed best headed by some excellent pinhooking touches."

The sale took place after an official opening of Doncaster’s new complex by England soccer star Michael Owen on Wednesday evening.
