Trainer Joe Orseno celebrates a perfect 5-for-5 day with Michelle Congelosi, DVM at Gulfstream Park April 7.

Trainer Joe Orseno added another notable accomplishment to his resume Monday at Gulfstream Park, sending out five winners on the nine-race card.

“To tell the truth going into the day, it sounds crazy, but I said every one of them is alive,” said Orseno after the last of the five. “We’ve got a pretty good chance. Of course you have to get some racing luck and I think we did in the third race.

“I've won four (in one day), but it was like two in Philadelphia and two at the Meadowlands--never four at one track. There was always the back-to-back Breeders' Cup wins. That might have been more money, but I think this was more fun.”

At the 2000 Breeders’ Cup, Orseno sent out Macho Uno  (Juvenile, gr. I) and Perfect Sting (Filly & Mare Turf, gr. IT) to wins at Churchill Downs. The 52-year-old native of Philadelphia also won the Preakness (gr. I) with Red Bullet.

Monday, Orseno swept the first three races on the program with Royal Goliath, Wyatt’s Appeal, and Wild Ones Event, followed by Colie Z in the sixth and finally Mean Demand in the eighth race to complete a perfect afternoon for the stable, although Reata’s Tsavo finished fourth behind Wyatt’s Appeal in the fourth as an entry-mate.

Orseno is the first trainer to win five races on a Gulfstream card since Todd Pletcher won five, on an 11-race card, on March 2, 2007. Orseno, whose feat came on a nine-race card, has a 15-11-7 record from 65 starters for the meet and is 10 behind Pletcher, the leader, with nine racing days left until the meet closes April 20.
