Joseph E. Johnson III, who owned the Kentucky Horse Center near Lexington, died March 28 in Bal Harbour, Fla., after a long illness. He was 77.

Johnson, who owned Tree Haven Farm in Central Kentucky, raced several stakes winners alone and in partnership, including Canadian champion Giboulee. His first stakes winner as a breeder was Cheeky Cherub in 1981.

A former Fayette County, Ky., judge, Johnson formed the Kenington Sales Company in 1978, which conducted its sales at the Kentucky Horse Center. Johnson later sold the training center. It now operates under the name Thoroughbred Center.
