The American Graded Stakes Committee did reinstate grade III status on the Jersey Derby, which was taken off the Monmouth Park turf course and run on the main track May 27. The committee did not reinstate grade III status for the Jaipur Handicap, which was taken off the Belmont Park turf course also on May 27...Calder Race Course received its second highest total of nominations for the 20th running of the Florida Stallion Stakes. A total of 959 colts and fillies were nominated to the series of six races that offers $1.2 million in purses. The number of eligible horses is up 8% from last year and second to a record 1,047 nominated in 1987...Total purses at Retama Park will average $100,000 per day for the first time. Highlights of the Thoroughbred meet, which starts June 4, will be the $100,000 El Joven Stakes and $100,000 La Senorita Stakes on Labor Day weekend...Ellis Park announced a revised schedule of 11 stakes races totaling $1 million for its 41-day meet beginning July 11. The highlight of the meet is the $200,000 Gardenia Stakes (gr. III) at 1 1/8 miles for fillies and mares. The Gardenia will be run Aug. 11...Romanian clothing manufacturer Yiannos Zorpides will extend his racing operation to California next year, according to Pete Cristofi, a veteran owner and Zorpides' adviser. Zorpides owns 40-50 horses he keeps on a 4,000-acre farm near Bucharest.
