Pyro Gallops After Arriving at Keeneland
Edited Press Release Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Pyro, likely favorite for Keeneland’s $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass (gr. I) April 12, stretched his legs in an easy mile gallop March 20 over the main Polytrack. Trained by Steve Asmussen and a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Pyro arrived at Keeneland in the early morning March 19. The three-year-old Pulpit colt shipped from Asmussen’s winter base at Fair Grounds, where he scored impressive wins in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) and Louisiana Derby (gr. II). “He came out of (his races) perfectly,” said Evan Downing, assistant to Asmussen. “He has a really good constitution, especially when it comes to dealing with stress.” Downing said Asmussen will be at Keeneland for Pyro’s first work, which will take place March 24 at about 6:30 a.m.
