Despite chilly, overcast weather on Saturday, opening day of Monmouth Park's 72-day season, the Oceanport, N.J., racetrack drew a total of 52,349 patrons for its three-day Memorial Day weekend. Total wagering on Monmouth racing, both on-track and at simulcast outlets, topped $13 million.

"This was a great weekend, and the quality of racing we presented was truly outstanding," said Bob Kulina, Monmouth's vice president and general manager. "This bodes well for the rest of the meet."

Buoyed by a $11.7-million purse supplement from the state, purses at Monmouth will average $300,000 per day. More than $1.3 million was distributed opening weekend.
