Rags to Riches, champion 3-year-old filly of 2007, returned to the work tab March 11 when she breezed three furlongs for trainer Todd Pletcher in :38.40, the fastest of seven moves at the distance.
The A.P. Indy filly has been in Pletcher’s Florida barn since returning from a lay-up at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. She was sidelined nearly four months while recovering from a hairline fracture to her right front pastern.
Bred in Kentucky by Skara Glen Stables out of the Deputy Minister mare Better Than Honour and owned by Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, Rags to Riches raced to four consecutive grade I wins in 2007 including the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) and the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Her last effort came in the Sept. 15 Gazelle Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park, in which she finished second to the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Lear’s Princess. Her injury was discovered following that race.
Rags to Riches was the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont.
