Lewis Pell and Michael Eigner’s Imawildandcrazyguy, fourth-place finisher in the 2007 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), seeks his first win since July of last year when he tackles eight other horses in the $65,000 Challenger Stakes March 8 at Tampa Bay Downs.
The gelded son of Wild Event, bred in Florida by Ward and Geraldine Theisen out of the Top Account mare Frosty Cupcake, was beaten 9 3/4 lengths in his most recent start, when he finished fourth in a seven-furlong allowance event Feb. 1 at Gulfstream Park. Late last year he turned in a pair of on-the-board efforts in grade III races – a third in the Fred W. Hooper Handicap  and a second in the Calder Derby  – for trainer Bill Kaplan.
Another recognizable figure in the 1 1/16 mile event is Raymond Cottrell’s Birdbirdistheword. The 4-year-old son of Pure Prizewas sixth Feb. 14 in the Shotintheheart Stakes at Gulfstream last time out for trainer Ken McPeek. Bred in Florida by Lucy and Randell Edwards out of the Rocky Mountain mare Berchta, he has not won since taking the Delta Jackpot Stakes (gr. III) in December of 2006.
