Mare Kills Adena Springs South Stallion Manager

The stallion manager for Adena Springs South was killed last Thursday morning, when he was kicked in the chest by a mare.

Charles David Johnson, 37, died as a result from injuries he sustained while pulling the teaser stallion off of a mare he was preparing to be bred, police said. Johnson was one of four farm employees at the site of the incident. The accident occurred at the farm located at N.W. Hwy 318, north of Ocala, Fla. "It's a terrible situation. Everyone at the farm is still in shock. He was a special person," said Adena Springs South general manager Mark Roberts.

The teaser stallion jumped over Johnson when he fell to the ground, but it's not known whether or not the horse (teaser stallion) stepped on the victim, police said. Paramedics were first to arrive on the scene, and administered CPR. Johnson never regained consciousness. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Johnson's body was transported to the coroner's office in Gainseville, police said. It will be several weeks before the results of the autopsy are available.
